Product Advice

The type of duvet, pillow or topper you choose actually makes a big difference to the way in which we sleep and also determines the quality of our sleep. The two main categories to choose from are made using either natural or man made properties. Natural options are filled with either feather and down or mainly down, whilst Man Made options are filled with soft polyester hollow fibre or microfibre.

Duvets
It is important to select a duvet type which is right for you. If you suffer from allergies, we would recommend a non-allergenic man-made duvet rather than a natural one as this should make sleeping more comfortable. A natural duvet may be preferable if you are seeking a more indulgent, premium duvet and don’t suffer from any allergies. Man made and Natural duvets perform in different ways in terms of weight, drape, feel and overall comfort.

The weight of a duvet is generally measured in either GSM (Grams per Square Metre) or Tog (Warmth to Weight ratio). The higher the Tog rating , the warmer and heavier the duvet . During the warmer summer months or for warmer temperatures, it is often preferable to use a lighter weight duvet which would generally be around 4.5 tog or 200 GSM. During cooler winter months and for lower daily temperatures, a heavier duvet is preferred to help with heat retention and comfort. A winter duvet would generally be 13.5 tog or 650 gsm. For other seasons, spring and autumn, a good choice would be 10.5 tog or 500 gsm. If you use a duvet with the right Tog / GSM for the specific time of the year, this will improve the quality of your sleep.

The drape of a duvet is also important and individual preference can vary. The general rule, is that natural duvets will drape around you more snugly compared to man made ones. This is due to the very nature of their lighter natural filling which means that they can envelop you more easily. Some people prefer that ‘cosy tucked in feeling’ and to feel the weight of a duvet over them. The ideal duvet choices for that cosy tucked in feeling would be a natural Feather & Down variety or a man made Hollow Fibre duvet. For the sleeper who prefers ‘warmth without weight’, a quality microfibre duvet or premium down natural filled duvet would be a good choice. There are different grades of fillings in both categories and if you trade upwards, you will make gains in terms of luxury and comfort.

Hollow Fibre duvets are an ideal entry level product and offer excellent value for money. As you move towards a cotton covered microfibre duvet featuring a cassette design construction, the filling used will feel lighter yet is more premium and has better insulation properties. This means that the user will be sleeping under a less heavy and more comfortable duvet.

The Feather and Down duvet is an ideal entry level natural duvet. The natural filling regulates your body temperature as you sleep. As you move upwards in the Natural range towards the higher quality down fillings, the amount of filling required to hit a tog rating is less which means the duvet is less heavy. The inherent characteristics of natural fillings, provide maximum warmth with less weight. Outer casings for our down duvets are available in the super fine higher thread count fabrics which means that these casings are also lighter in weight. This also contributes to an overall light weight and more comfortable product in use.

Why is warmth without weight so important? Studies show that when we sleep we perspire about half a litre of moisture every night. A lighter duvet means that as we toss and turn there will be less drag on us as we sleep. This of course leads to a deeper, more restful sleep, which will leave you refreshed for the day ahead.

If your duvet is too heavy or warm when you sleep you will toss and turn to try and reach a preferred temperature. Unfortunately, this tossing and turning will mean that you will perspire more and will lead to a more restless and disturbed sleep. So it is important that you select the right weight and quality.

Pillows
Pillows are also very important in ensuring that you get a restful night’s sleep. There are three main categories; soft pillows, medium pillows and firm pillows. A soft pillow is better for somebody who tends to sleep on their back or stomach. Medium pillows are better suited to people that like to sleep on their side as these offer more support for the neck and shoulders. Firm pillows are a good option for people who have wide shoulders or again, for those who tend to sleep on their side.

Toppers
Bed toppers complete the range. Soft Bedding produces both man made and natural varieties. Our man-made cluster fill topper has a generous depth of 5cm. Its filling is a resilient 100% ball fibre which provides optimum support night after night. Filling is encased in a beautifully soft 233 thread cotton cover.

We also offer a single and a dual chamber in natural fillings. The 5cm deep single chamber topper is filled with feather and down whilst our dual chamber topper is 7.5cm deep and contains feather in the bottom chamber and luxurious soft down on the top chamber. Each of these options are encased in a 233 thread count cotton cover for maximum comfort.

All of our toppers have 4 anchor elastic straps to secure the topper to the mattress.
